Weight loss is a widely discussed topic. However throughout history, hunger is the main theme. Escaping hunger is a recent thing, with only a couple of decades of history. The advances in agriculture created the abundance in food. This no doubt created obesity. Not to long ago, a polite greeting in China was, “you’ve gained weight!” due to widespread poverty. Now days that phrase is an insult.

Being overweight is undesirable because it harms our health. It is a breeding ground for many diseases such as high blood lipid level. Blood lipids are fatty substances found in blood, such as cholesterol and triglycerides. Blood with high lipid level are more viscous, which reduces the flow. Bad flow leads to blockages which could lead to death.

Being overweight has high risk on the health. People who recognizes this race against time to lose their weight. Their methods are really diverse too. Some try medicine. Some try gastrectomy (partial or whole removal of the stomach). Some try liposuction. Some even goes as far as swallowing taper worm larvae. These unnatural methods have very big side effects.

One of my patient took the doctor's advice and had a gastrectomy. Two months later her gall bladder started to hurt. It was excruciating. The doctor then suggested to remove it. After that there is no telling what other part of the body will start to hurt and in need of removal. In the end the perpetual pain will reduce a big amount of her quality of life.

The best way to lose weight is control food intake. Eat less and exercise more. Though it’s easier said than done, but there is no shortcut. For the sake of your health, it must be done. Weight loss requires determination, without it weight loss just becomes an empty phrase. After you are determined, you then need a concrete goal. If the goal is too high then it’s hard to reach, which would just demoralize you. Many people start out by setting their goal on losing 50 pounds. Because the goal is too high it was too easy to fail. Then the failures just make people give up.

Small goals are easier to achieve. Once you’ve planned out the small goal you will have to stay consistent. Here consistency is victory. When I determined to lose weight, I started by setting my goal at 5 lbs. When I achieved it I set another goal of 5 lbs. After two years, I have cut my weight by 20 lbs. One thing worthy of mentioning is that after the 20 lbs of loss, I have also successfully cured my high blood pressure.

Rhinitis simply the irritation and inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose. From the my customers, many people have rhinitis. I could tell by observing the reflection area in the foot. Rhinitis isn’t a serious disease, but it’s extremely annoying. Rhinitis attacks when you get a cold, making it hard to breath through your nose, and some times you couldn’t breath through your nose at all. During seasonal changes, your allergy activates rhinitis, making you sneeze, sinus pains, runny noses and etc. Though extremely annoying, these are fairly innocuous. However it’s hard for people to realize that rhinitis might also have some dire consequence. People with sever case of rhinitis may suffer from memory problems. And this is the topic that I want to address.

Mucus, snot, or whatever you call them. Disgusting though it maybe, it is still part of your body fluid. The body expend energy to produce this  fluid. The quantity of this fluid is limited. Mucus can clean out dirty particles in your nose, and resist against coldness. But, it is also the same liquid that gets circulated into your brain. Because the proximity between the nose and the brain, too much discharge of this body fluid through the nose will reduce the amount that can get transported to your brain. This will have adverse effect for the brain, mainly on our memory. Thus people who frequently have runny nose don’t have good memory. This was the case with all my customers. Thus caring for the nose not only keep you breathing well but also keep your brain in good health.

Many people think that they are all powerful and want to experiment on the human body, which has been created perfect by God, or perfected by billions of years of evolution. Some people have yet to wrap up with the procedures for tonsil removal, and are already experimenting with cutting off the gall bladder, while some are even planning to remove the appendix. We pay high medical fees to hurt our own body. While going through the inevitable and various kinds of painful post operation, we think we are helped or even saved by medical advancements, and are thankful for what a wonderful age we live in. Speechlessness is the only proper response to such behavior and sentiment.

You are what you eat, such that diseases enter through the mouth. Tonsil is part of the immune system and your first line of defense when fighting throat infection. When it is removed, even though your tonsil won’t ever get infected again, you will catch other much severe diseases. The appendix that is created by God is not something useless as we feel. It has a very effective ability to digest fur. Because modern diet has a lot less fur, this ability has seen some reduction.

Even though you can live without the gallbladder, you will see a tremendous discount on your quality of life. There are two customers who came often to our shop for foot massage. Both are female and average 65 years of age. One had her gall bladder removed several years ago, the other did not. The one without her gall bladder does not feel well with the body at all. Besides physical pain at various places in the body, she also experiences great amount of stress, with many disease plaguing her. She never seemed energetic and gets tired easily. Comparing with the other lady who maintained the holism of the body, it’s like comparing heaven and earth. Though she also experiences stress, she shows great amount of vigor. Her voice is rich, and her constitution is strong, she is generally in much better health condition. Most importantly she displays a very good positive mindset.

Our gall bladders store the bile that was secreted from our liver. It releases the bile into our intestines to help with digestion as according to the different level of need of the body. We consume food of various colors, they all get expelled in only one color, and this is due to the gall bladder.

The main reason people remove their gall bladder is mainly because of gallstone. Gallstone is caused by high toxic level of the bile. When the liver experiences a reduction in its effectiveness, it won’t effectively remove the toxin from the bile, and this greatly increases the probability of occurrence of gallstone. Even though the symptom of gallstone is observed in the gall bladder but cause stems from the liver. This is why when gallstones are removed, it relapses in the future, and doctors will suggest removing the gall bladder. Would you cut off your head just because it hurts?

In China, gallstone are treated with very conservative method. One of the method is combine reflexology with herbal medicine that helps to decrease the size of gallstones such that it will automatically get washed away by the circulatory and digestive system. In my long experience with massage therapy, I have come to realize that our body is very robust: it has the ability to heal itself. There was a mother who contracted stomach cancer. She was 40 years old and had a one year old son. What’s worse was that her mother and her maternal grandmother both had cancer and chemotherapy done. One lived for two years, the other lived for only year. She did not want to follow the same path as her mother and grandmother. She wanted to live well and raise her son.  
     She began searching for doctors and medicines, but they did not bring her hope. She then began to self-study traditional Chinese medicine, to learn of natural ways to overcome cancer. After she tried various methods according to theory of traditional Chinese medicine, at last, she used acupressure on Meridian points to have successfully triumphed over this disease, and became a master massage therapist. Today she is 75 years old, but looks only 60. 
     Through studying, she has a relatively clear comprehension of medicine. Through clinical massaging experience, she was able to eliminate pains from diseases for many people. She strongly believed that our body is all powerful, having a very strong self-healing ability. When handled properly, much of our pain can be self-healed without modern medicine meddling, with unexpected positive outcomes.  
     The story of this mother has deeply inspired and encouraged me. I have struggled through numerous diseases and pains myself when I crossed the 40 year mark. At first, it was Periodontitis (teeth gum disease), then it was the severe loss of eye sight, immediately following that was the frequent numbness of the fingers. The objects which I held in my hand would frequently fall to the ground without me noticing. For these I have sought many doctors and took various medicines, but the results were nonexistent. Five years ago because of the numbness in my fingers and severe vision loss, I had to leave my job as an auto mechanic and enter a massage school to become a massage therapist.  
     I am very joyous that I made the decision to change my career. During the process, I had the chance to study anatomy and some basic medicinal knowledge as well as experience the charm of massage. But most importantly I came to know and later learn from the massage master I have mentioned before. Using massage, I have successfully ended my dependence on modern medicine, and overcame many disease pains.  
     Here is one example. Fourteen years ago, I had contracted Periodontitis. I sought after a dentist and accepted deep clean. Ever since then, for the next twelve years, I kept cleaning my teeth every three to four months and X-Ray and check up every six months. Every day I would floss my teeth. Even though after all these, I could not use the left side of my teeth to chew because they are too sensitive. After asking numerous dentists about this, some suggested that if my teeth is too sensitive, I should just remove them. I did not wish to do that. 
     About more than a year ago, I used the aforementioned meridian acupressure massage technique, the Gallbladder meridian stimulation to alleviate my teeth problem. I thought it was unthinkable, but the fact was that, after using the technique for six minutes daily, at the tenth month, I suddenly noticed that the left side of my teeth was no longer sensitive, and I could chew with that side. What was even more amazing was that I hadn't been to a dentist for the past two years, nor did I floss at a daily basis.  
     Meridian theory from the Chinese medicine spoke of two gallbladder meridian path ways at the side of the human body which stem from the head down to the foot. The outer thigh is also an area which these meridian path way passes through.  Modestly beating the outer thigh where the meridian passes through will stimulate your gallbladder to release some bile or "gallbladder juice" into the intestine to help further digest food. This helps the body to absorb nutrient more efficiently which later help boost the body's ability to create blood. When a person's blood level reaches a healthy and balanced level, there will be more blood circulated into the gums. The gum that was originally shriveled now will rejuvenate and cover the root of the teeth. Naturally the teeth won't be as sensitive, and thus improve the Periodontitis condition.  
    Large amount of massage experience made me deeply realize that, our body which was gifted from God is the most perfect. The wisdom that was imbued to our body far exceeds our imagination. It is unfortunate that often times due to our misunderstanding of the body, we misuse and mistreat it, causing various kinds of disease and pain, then later blame that our body is imperfect and weak. A typical example is that during the 1920s through 1930s, many people removed their tonsils, throwing it away as a trash.  
     When we accidentally cut our selves, and blood gushes out, the doctor merely helps by stitching or bandaging it up. But the real healer is your own body. When we misuse our body, leading to damages to our organs or tissues, our body will heal it self. In the end, Our body is the real doctor that help us overcome disease and pain. The best way to obtain and maintain health is to listen to our body, treat our body well, and correctly use our body.  
     Thus I urge you to believe in your own body, pay attention to what goes in and comes out of your body, and readily correct the wrong ways your body is being used. When you follow the natural law, there is no need to worry, health and happiness will belong to you. ]]>

The doctor did not know the cause so he suggested colonoscopy to find out what is causing this pain. After waiting about four months, she finally got to do the procedure, but it didn’t find anything out of the ordinary, and the pain still remains. The doctor suggested to see a specialist, even after seeing the specialist the results is still inconclusive. Asking friends and relatives yielded a wide range of different answers. In the end, I unwillingly sought after Chinese medicine, searching the web for a solution.

          According to my wife’s description of her pain, I guessed it to be chronic appendicitis. Chinese medicine suggested that herbal medicine can be used to suppress the pain, but here in the united states, it’s impractical to gather the ingredients. Then I sought after foot reflexology. According to the theory, massaging the reflective area under the foot will help with the alleviation of symptoms. I had my wife to massage the reflective area of appendix in her foot every day. After about half a month, her pain in the lower right abdomen slowly faded away! Since then, my confidence in the effect of foot massage increased greatly, and I shared them with my customers.

          Three months ago, I had one customer who had her gallbladder removed. After the removal, she feels a lot of pain on her pancreas. She sought massage to alleviate her pain. I instructed her to massage the reflected area of pancreas under the foot. At home everyday, she soaked her foot in foot spa for 30 minutes, and then massaged the part of her foot that reflected the pancreas for 10 minutes. After one month and half, the pain she felt also slowly faded away. 

          So one should not dismiss foot reflexology as trivial. Sometimes it could help great deal in alleviating some serious pain. All that you really need is your hands. In China, using foot reflexology massage to alleviate pain is not something new or out of the norm, pain associated with many illness can be alleviated by a massage therapist.

          The different parts of the body are reflected on the bottom of the foot, and the foot contains a lot of information about the body. Many illness would leave a mark in the foot. A foot reflexologist with lots of experience should be able to tell a person’s health status by massaging the foot, and even help heal a minor illness before it gets serious.

Sciatic nerve is the longest nerve strand in the body. It originates from the lower back region, crossing the buttocks, through the entire leg, ending in the bottom of the foot. Thus sciatic pain originates from the lower back and propagates throughout the entire span of the nerve affecting the entire leg and the foot. This pain makes walking painful.

Pain relieve through medicinal usage has a very limited effect. However, massaging is very effective to alleviate such pain. There are many customers who came for the massage treatment, after 3-4 times, their pain was greatly reduced. If visiting a massage therapist is not convenient for you, you could also perform self massage at your own leisure. I would like to introduce some methods so you can help your self. All the methods utilizes the Chinese reflexology. If you are not familiar with the concept of reflexology, there is also an article posted in this website. 
Method 1 "Jinmen" meridian
Jinmen meridian is a nerve meridian located at the side of the foot shown in picture below. It could be translated to golden gate meridian. What can be done with the Jinmen is to press it with a ball point pen. After about 5 minutes, you should feel some alleviation from the pain. It should be noted that pressing the Jinmen meridian can only relieve pain, like taking in pain medicine, it does not have any healing effects.

Method 2. Ear reflexology
Using the point of the finger, apply pressure to the most painful reflected area for the sciatic nerve for 1-2 minutes. The pressing strength will depend on your own pain tolerance. It should be noticed that not enough force will not have any effect. Left foot will correspond to right ear, and right foot will correspond to left ear. The ear reflexology diagram is shown below.

The point labeled Heel, Toe, Ankle, and etc all correspond to the Leg area, find the most painful point and pressure it for 1-2 minutes
Method 3 Lying Down
As you were lying down, place a small sphere between the surface and your buttocks. Using your own weight to apply pressure to buttock area so as to stretch the buttocks muscle. When buttocks muscle became relaxed, it will reduce the stress it causes to the sciatic nerve and thus achieve the pain relief.
Method 4. Direct massaging the pain area
Request a family member to directly massage your pain area. The buttocks area will require some strength, however let your pain tolerance to decide the level of massage strength. At the same time the effect will be better if massaging is combined with Acupressure Massage or Trigger point therapy.

One of the reasons that causes it is the restrictive blood circulation around the lower back region.
          There is a strand of muscle called Quadratus lumborum. It is attached to the last rib, Lumbar vertebrae, and iliac crest. If this muscle contracts and unable to relax, it will cause the spine in the lower back region to experience pressure and restricts the blood flow and causes pain.
          To alleviate lower back pain, one must relax the Quadratus Lumborum muscle. The best way to relax it is through massage. Stretching after a session of massage will reduce the stress and pressure the lower back spine and improve the blood flow in that region which will reduce or even eliminate lower back pain.
          There are also a significant portion of people who experience lower back pain due to hardened kidney. For this case, daily massage of the kidney would soften the kidney and reduce the lower back pain. While back in massage school, there was one student who had been experiencing severe lower back pain. We found out that his kidney was hard like stone. Then we helped him massage his kidney daily for about half a month. Then his lower back pain was gone permanently.

Most headache cases are Tension Headaches. The best way to relieve tension headache is not medicine, but De-stress Massage. Generally Table Massage or Chair Massage can effectively take care of headache problems.
     So What causes headaches? It is stress. Stress causes the muscle to be in contraction. Muscle under contraction reduces the efficiency of the blood flow. These two muscle are closely related to the head. Massaging of these two muscle can relax them, and naturally increase the efficiency of the blood flow to the head, and thus reduce the headaches or even make them disappear.

However, not many people will know the effects of the difference between the maximum pressure (systolic) and minimum pressure. (diastolic) For example, there are two persons below with their max pressure minus their min pressure.

Person A: 125 – 70 = 55

Person B: 135-100 = 35

Person A's max and min pressure are totally within the healthy range. Person B's max and min are both a bit high. So who is healthier? Most people will think that person a is healthier, but actually it's the opposite. Person A's pressure difference is 55 (>40), person B's pressure difference is 35 (<40). High pressure difference indicates bad flexibility of the blood vessel, and low pressure difference means good flexibility of the blood vessel. A pressure difference of less than 40 is good. Good flexibility of the vessel will allow for better control of the blood pressure and allow for smoother flow of the blood.

Even person A's max and min pressure are all within healthy regions, but the pressure difference is higher than 40, so the vessel is not very flexible. Without a flexible vessel, the blood will not flow smoothly, if the blood pressure suddenly increases, it might result in a broken vessel.

To better the flexibility of the blood vessel, the best way is to physical exercise, and also hydrotherapy I've mentioned in previous post.

I know once I start taking these medicine, I will be dependent on it for the rest of life. Surely, this experience is shared by many people. Also my doctor recommended me to take a aspirin a day to help the blood vessel. Needless to say, I did not take the prescribed medicine.

     While at massage school, our teacher measured our blood pressure and found mine to be the highest. The higher number is 148. This really alarmed me, finding a way to lower my blood pressure had become a pressing matter. So how do I lower my blood pressure? Is the prescribed medicine the only way? Is there a principle of physics that would help me? Then I remembered one of the lesson mentioned hydrotherapy.

     The lesson about hydrotherapy discussed about hot shower and cold shower. When taking a hot shower, our blood vessel will expand, when taking a cold shower, our blood vessel will contract. Simple physics. If right after our hot shower, we turn the water all the way cold, the blood vessel will expand then contract. This expansion and contraction provides the best “exercise” for the blood vessel and making them more flexible, and allowing the blood to flow more smoothly inside our body and naturally lower the blood pressure. Then I started taking a cold shower right after I am done with hot shower. Even though it was very discomforting, but I still persisted. And for three years straight, till today, my blood pressure is always normal, well below 130.

     Caution must be taken that, the cold shower should not be to long, if you feel sickly, do not try this.
